Clinical Implications

Current recommendations from the ADA call for a target HbA1c of less than 7.5% for healthy older adults and a target HbA1c of less than 8% or even 8.5% among more frail older adults.

The current study demonstrates that overtreatment of type 2 diabetes is more common than undertreatment among older and frail adults, with high associated rates of hypoglycemia and falls.

Implications for the Healthcare Team: The healthcare team should be judicious with the total of medications dispensed for diabetes among older and/or frail adults, with specific attention to reduce the risk for hypoglycemia among these patients.
