This education aims to give physicians working in Emergency Departments competencies to be able to perform Emergency Medicine Ultrasound

Education in Emergency Medicine Ultrasound

Aim of the education
After completing the education, the course participant is expected to be able to perform the following examinations un-supervised at a basic level:

Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (e-FAST)
    Focused Cardiac Ultrasound (FoCUS)
    Focused Lung Ultrasound (FLUS)
Limited Compression Ultrasonography for DVT (LCU)
    Focused Abdominal Ultrasound (FAS)

Structure of the Education
The education consists of the following three modules with subsequent certification:

E-learn module:

Prior to the practical, hands-on module the course participants have to complete a theoretical e-learn course in the different types of Emergency Medicine Ultrasound. The course participant should expect to use at least 8-16 hours of work to complete the e-learn module.

Hands-on module:
The hands-on module consists of a two-day practical course in Emergency Medicine Ultrasound. Each of the different types of ultrasound examinations are trained on healthy persons as well as on patients. In order to ensure maximum hands-on time, the ratio between course instructors and course participants are 1:2.

Supervision module:

After completing the e-learn and hands-on modules the course participant performs supervised US examinations at his/her own department. The supervision takes place in two different ways:

On-site supervision: A physician from the course participants own department experienced and certified in Emergency Medicine Ultrasound performs direct supervision of the performed examinations.
On-line supervision: The course participant has to upload a number of examinations to an e-learn system. An instructor will then review the uploaded examinations and provide online feedback and supervision.

Certification
The certification is conducted as a "return-day" at the University Of Southern Denmark. The return-day consists of theoretical and practical examination of the course participant. Following the examination process, general and individual feedback will be given to the course participants. The course participant has to attend a return-day within 12 months following the hands-on module.

Approval of completed Education in Emergency Medicine Ultrasound

Approval is given when the course participant has completed all 3 modules as well as having successfully completed the certification on the return-day.

Course participants
Each education is conducted with a maximum of 12 participants in order to ensure as much hands-on time as possible.
