Dr. Anders Hansen - The Attention Fix: How to Focus in a World That Wants to Distract You
Dr. Anders Hansen, a psychiatrist and author of The Attention Fix, explains that the brain’s primary purpose is survival, shaped by evolution to constantly scan for danger. Because attention is so limited and essential, modern digital life—designed to compete for and capture our focus—erodes it more than ever before. Hansen cites recent research from the Karolinska Institute showing that heavy social-media use among children is linked to increased inattentiveness and hyperactivity.
He argues that smartphones and social media also reduce sleep, physical activity, and real-life social interaction—three key protective factors against anxiety and depression. Rising rates of mental-health problems, especially among young people, reflect this erosion. For teens, excessive social-media use can be particularly harmful because it amplifies social comparison at a vulnerable developmental stage, sending the brain signals of not belonging—a perceived threat from an evolutionary perspective.
Hansen emphasizes that reducing—not eliminating—social-media exposure can help protect mental well-being. He also notes that reading physical books strengthens comprehension more than reading the same text on screens, a gap that is widening as digital distractions increase. Ultimately, he argues that safeguarding attention and minimizing digital interruptions are essential for learning and mental health.
